Nicole Villano is the General Manager of Deep Roots Market Cooperative. She came into the position during a crisis and has been able to stabilize and build a solid team of managers and hourly staff, fine tune operations for efficiency, correct systems that were causing money losses, and turn a profit while paying down debts. She is a graduate from Appalachian State University with a degree in Anthropology. Nicole has spent most of her career in management. From owning and operating a restaurant to managing group homes for abused children, Nicole’s experience with inspiring people to work together towards a shared vision is extensive. She has over 10 years of direct experience in management within grocery stores. Her passion for healthy, fresh and local foods coupled with her personal interests in systems people create together and work within, keeps her committed to the cooperative movement and to Deep Roots Market.
Brittany oversees our Meat & Produce Departments and our POS System. She is a passionate cooperator and has been working at Food Co-ops for the past six years. She is an advocate for localizing our food supply, increasing food security and education around sustainability. Since joining our team Brittany has used her keen eye for detail and data focus to improve signage in the Produce Department by letting customers know where their food is coming from, has created systems to improve operations across the store, and is currently engaged in making sure all the information in our POS is up to date.
Tiffany is a native of Greensboro, NC and has been with the Co-op for almost 4 years. She has over 15 years of retail customer service experience with the majority of that being in management. Tiffany has a passion for the people and creating community. She is a favorite among the Co-op staff and customer base. She always brings a warm smile, a team focus and the best for customer experience to the table every day. Tiffany is constantly recruited to join and lead in other workplaces, but her passion for the Co-op keeps her grounded in the community’s best interests.
Janis earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a Masters degree from Auburn University in Education. Janis was a teacher for 10 years and has been with Deep Roots for more than 25 years. Her 30+ years of experience in natural foods has allowed her to see the trends in the industry and to attend extensive trainings and conferences. She has a wealth of knowledge regarding herbs and proven natural paths to health and wellness. According to many of our well-travelled customers, she has procured one of the best sets of supplements and teas in the country. Janis has been married for 47 years and has two children and four grandchildren.
Everette has been with Deep Roots for a short time, but he has a wealth of 19 years of experience in management and specifically 15 in kitchen management. Since taking over the kitchen here, he has increased the department margin by over 10 points! His positivity is infectious and he is a favored manager with staff. Everett’s passion is cooking. He has won 4 out of the 4 cooking competitions that he has entered. He is also a very active community volunteer, dedicating at least one weekend a month to Boy Scouts.
Chantae has been with the Co-op for almost 6 years now and has mastered just about every department as she worked her way into management. Chantae has a passion for the cooperative business model and considers it a healing place for the community. She has a keen eye for the best deals and has improved the grocery selection and pricing for the entire department. Chantae is focused on merchandising, margin and operations. She has built a well trained staff that can operate the department, without issue, in her absence. She is a dedicated cooperator and strives for overall store improvements with a constant flow of great ideas and operational methods to get things done efficiently. Chantae grew up in Asheville, NC; she came to Greensboro to attend A&T University.
Matt has worked in retail for more than 15 years with 7 being in management and 4 with Deep Roots. Matt is driven to see the Co-op’s financial success and has been instrumental in keeping our accounts up to date and paid on time during a financial crisis. He has cleaned up the Co-op’s financial records while working closely with our accountants and finance committee. He is dedicated to a transparent working of the Co-op’s finances. Matt’s communication with vendors and lenders has been instrumental in keeping the store open during the toughest of times. In addition to that difficult work, he has worked closely with the General Manager on updating the employee policy manual and payroll systems, ensuring that staff feel valued and have guidelines that make sense. Matt’s dedication to this community, the Co-op’s staff and the local economy shows through his loyalty, diligence and time that he gives freely and without hesitation.
Meghan is a skilled, local, fine artist and graphic designer. She received her degree through Guilford Tech's renowned Advertising and Graphic Design Program. She has been at Deep Roots for 5 years.
